Second Language Acquisition

I chose this theme because I am interested in teaching English to Japanese students and Japanese to students other than Japanese. I think that when teachers teach a second language, they should know about techniques of teaching a second language. Through this research, I found some popular, common methods.

5 things I learned

・Grammar-Translation Method
In this method, students are required to translate a target language into their native language based on grammar.

・Direct Method
In this method, audio inputs are focused rather than grammar. In classroom, only target language is required.

・Total Physical Response
Students are required to respond physically to commands of a teacher. Through this approach, students are expected to improve their abilities to catch and understand what the teacher are saying.

I found this video in You Tube. children are responding with their bodies to what the teacher saying.

・Silent Way
In this method, teachers should be silent as much as possible, and encourage students to think by themselves so that students can discover something like rules and gain insights. To make this approach successful, teachers need some specific materials such as sound/color wall charts, word wall charts, spelling wall charts, and rods.

This video shows how the class is going. You can see its unique materials.

・Suggestopedia
The objective of this method is to activate students' brains and make students relaxed, motivated by using posters or songs.

I give you this video. This clip demonstrates mind states of students. They are relaxed with a song.

Resources

I have more resources.

This slide shows you the history of SLA theories.

Next slide are about SLA methods. You can see more methods than I showed above.

I give a You Tube video. This sees SLA in a unique viewpoint.

I want you to know about this man. He is one of the most famous linguists.

Sometimes leaning other languages is difficult and takes much energy. I recommend this document, because it is about how to motivate people in SLA class.
